Mowing line: What shape?

Maaidraad: Welke vorm?

Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a novice at maintaining your lawn, choosing the right cutting line can make a difference in the trimmer's performance. There are different forms of cutting line available, each with its own features and benefits. In this blog post we explore the different forms of mowing line.

Round cutting line

Round mowing line is the most common and traditional form of mowing line. It is versatile and suitable for general trimming work. Due to the round shape, the wire contains the maximum amount of weight compared to the maximum diameter, making round wire last the longest. Round wire also takes on a stable cutting shape the fastest, because the air resistance at the top and bottom of the wire is always the same. Round cutting line is generally the most affordable and easy to obtain.

Square cutting line

Square cutting line has a more angular profile than round cutting line, making it more efficient at cutting tougher vegetation and thicker grasses. Due to its shape, it contains less weight (about 36%) compared to round mowing line, which means it wears out faster. It is therefore advisable to use slightly thicker square wire, with a weight comparable to that of round wire, provided the mowing head allows it. The sharper corners provide more cutting power, making it ideal for use on rough terrain.

Twisted cutting line

Twisted cutting line is made by turning the mold during production, or in some cases by providing the line with diagonal notches. This shape ensures better distribution of the air during rotation, which creates fewer strong sound waves. This makes twisted mowing line somewhat quieter and more energy efficient, which is especially important with an electric (battery) trimmer.

Serrated cutting line

Serrated cutting line has small notches or teeth along the edges, making it better able to cut through very tough weeds. It is mainly used for thick mowing line, because the notches also make the line weaker.

Star-shaped cutting line

Star-shaped mowing line, or wire with another shape that has sharp edges, has excellent cutting properties that cut grass more evenly. This means there is less damage to the plant, which makes for a healthier garden. In heavier applications, the sharp edges quickly wear off, leaving a thinner wire (compared to round wire).

When choosing cutting lines, it is important to consider factors such as the type of vegetation you want to mow, the size of the property and the specifications of your trimmer. By choosing the right type of mowing line, you can mow more efficiently and enjoy a beautifully maintained lawn.
